Building a Community of Bandicoot Buddies

This project supported by the City of Casey Living Lab is engaging schools, residents, and landholders in Southern Casey to monitor the endangered Southern Brown Bandicoot.

The project uses wildlife cameras on school grounds and private properties to track bandicoot activity and other wildlife. Students participate in hands-on monitoring, while landholders receive camera kits, support from NRM consultants, and feedback on species detected on their properties.

Activities began in early 2025 and include fortnightly camera surveys, community engagement events, and distribution of Bandicoot Buddy totem signs to participating properties. All observations are recorded on the Victorian Biodiversity Atlas, providing valuable data for conservation planning.

By empowering the local community to contribute to biodiversity monitoring, the project helps protect bandicoot populations, improve understanding of habitat use, and foster connections between residents, schools, Landcare, and the City of Casey.
